Mandisa, American Idol Star and Grammy-Winning Christian Singer, Dies at 47

Christian music singer who competed on American Idol and then pursued a Grammy-winning career

Mandisa Hundley, the Grammy-winning Christian singer who competed on American Idol and then pursued a Grammy-winning career, has died. She was 47.

Mandisa's death was announced on April 19, 2024, by her record label, Capitol CMG. The label did not disclose the cause of death.

Mandisa rose to fame in 2006 when she competed on the fifth season of American Idol. She finished in ninth place, but her powerful vocals and energetic personality made her a fan favorite.

After American Idol, Mandisa signed with Capitol CMG and released her debut album, "Overcomer," in 2007. The album was a commercial success, selling over 500,000 copies and earning Mandisa a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Album.

Mandisa went on to release seven more albums, including "It's What I Do" (2008), "The Anchor" (2010), and "Out of the Dark" (2013). She also won two more Grammy Awards, for Best Gospel Album in 2012 and 2014.

In addition to her music career, Mandisa was also an author and motivational speaker. She wrote three books, including "Overcomer: A Journey of Faith, Hope, and Triumph" (2008) and "Out of the Dark: My Journey Through Depression" (2013).

Mandisa is survived by her husband, David Thomas, and their two children.

Mandisa was a talented singer and songwriter who used her platform to share her faith and inspire others. She will be deeply missed by her fans and loved ones.
